I. Diplomatic Relations
Greece is represented in Panama through the parallel accreditation of her Embassy in Mexico City.
II. Framework of Treaties
The following agreements have been concluded with Panama: Agreement on the Abolition of Visas for Regular, Diplomatic and Service Passport Holders (1998), Agreement on Co-operation in the fields of Culture and Education (1998) and Economic and Technological Co-operation Agreement (1999).
III. Political Relations
Bilateral political relations have traditionally been very good. The active presence of Greek Community members in the countrys political life plays an important part in this respect.
In 1999, the then president of Panama Ernesto Perez Balladares visited Greece, and in 2002 a meeting was held between the Presidents of the two countries Parliaments, A. Kaklamanis and Ruben Arozemena Valdes.
IV. Economic and Trade Relations
Trade: according to data from the Greek National Statistical Service, the trade balance with Panama shows a deficit for Greece and amounted to 17.344 million. More specifically, Greek exports to Panama amounted to $12.276 million, with imports at 29.620 million.
V. Cultural Relations
Greece offers scholarships for postgraduate studies through the State Scholarships Foundation and the Onassis Foundation.
On the initiative of the Honorary Consul General the Greek Cultural Centre Instituto Atenea, an educational institution with facilities for the staging of cultural events, has been set up.
VI. The Greek Community
The Greek Community of Panama, the most active in Central America, numbers about 1,000 people, 500 of whom live in Panama City, 140 being active members of the local community.
