I. Diplomatic Relations

Relations between the two countries have been traditionally friendly since Algerias first years of independence. Greece maintains an Embassy in Algiers, and Algeria is represented in Greece by its Embassy in Athens.

II. Political Relations

Greek-Algerian political relations are at a very good level, and the two countries are linked by bonds of traditional friendship. The Algerian side recognises the help it received from Greece in establishing itself in the international community from the very outset of its independence.

These good relations are borne out by our cooperation in international fora, as well as by our mutual support for the candidacies of the two countries in various international organisations.

III. Greek-Algerian Contractual Framework

1.       Agreement on economic, scientific and technical cooperation (Algiers, 13/05/1982). Law 1631/1986 (GG A 101/1986). In effect as of 16/03/1987.

2.       Agreement on mutual encouragement and protection of investments (Algiers, 20/02/2000). Law 2870/2000 (GG A 276/2000).

3.       Agreement on educational cooperation (Athens, 22/06/1988). Law 91/1991 (GG A 193/1991).

IV. Economic Relations

Until 1980, economic and trade relations between our country and Algeria were not particularly developed. In 1982, a significant step forward was made with the signing of the agreement on economic, scientific, and technical cooperation. Subsequently, despite the excellent level of political relations, there was no similar interest in upgrading bilateral economic relations and trade exchanges.

But, after 2000, there was a significant increase in the Greek-Algerian volume of trade mainly due to imports of natural gas from Algeria. In 2007, Algeria was ranked 6th among Greeces Arab trade partners.

V. Greek-Algerian Cultural Relations

Greek-Algerian educational relations are regulated by the Educational Agreement of 22 June 1988, which went into effect on 1 June 1993. In 2000, the first Educational Programme was signed, in Algeria, for the years 2000-2002, and will remain in effect until the signing of the new Programme. The Programme provides for cooperation and exchanges in the sectors of Education, Science, Archives and Libraries, Culture, Mass Media, Sport and Youth.
