III. Political relations
Official relations between Greece and Kuwait began as far back as 1964.
Greece was one of the 34 member countries in the coalition which assisted in the liberation of Kuwait from Iraq in 1991, also participating in the UNICOM mission to patrol the demilitarized zone along the Kuwait-Iraq border (the UNICOM mandate expired on 6 October 2003).
On 26 January 2005 Greece assumed the presidency of the Governing Council of the United Nations Compensation Committee for Iraq, whose task is to decide on claims for compensation for direct losses and damage suffered by persons, states, companies and international organizations as a consequence of the Iraqi invasion and occupation of Kuwait between 2.8.1990 and 2.3.1991.
On the bilateral level the desire for closer relations led to the signing in December 1998 during the visit by the then Foreign Minister Mr. Pangalos to Kuwait - of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Foreign Ministries on bilateral political consultations.
IV. Economic and trade relations
Economic and trade relations between Greece and Kuweit have not been particularly developed thus far, and Greek investments in Kuweit are still at a low level.
V. Cultural relations
The Agreement on educational and cultural cooperation provides an excellent basis for the promotion of cultural relations.
VI. The Greek community
There are around 140 Greeks living in Kuwait, most of them working for local businesses. As yet there is no formal association of Greek residents, but there is a Greek Orthodox Church, subject to the Patriarchate of Antioch.
