Morocco

I. Diplomatic Relations

Bilateral relations between Greece and Morocco have traditionally been very good. They are particularly favoured by the general trend consisting in the development of cooperation and in the promotion of relations between the countries of the Mediterranean. Greece has an Embassy in Rabat, and Morocco is represented in Greece by its Embassy to Athens.

II. Political relations

The very good political relations between Greece and Morocco are due both to the traditionally friendly relations our country has been fostering with all the Arab countries, and to Rabats efforts to develop relations with the European Union and its member states at bilateral level.

There is very good cooperation between the two countries through the mutual support of candidacies within international organisations.

With regard to the exchange of visits, Morocco's Foreign Minister Mr. Benaissa carried out a working visit to our country in November 2006, and the four-member Greek-Moroccan Parliamentary Friendship Group delegation officially visited Rabat upon an invitation by the Speaker of Moroccos Parliament.

III. Treaty Framework Major Inter-State Agreements

- Agreement on air transport (Rabat, 10.5.1999)

- Agreement on the Settlement of the Financial Consequences of the Implementation of Decrees on Greek citizens (Rabat, 20.4.1977)

- Visa Waiver Agreement (Rabat, 10.6.1963)

- Visa Waiver Agreement for Diplomatic and Official Passports (Athens, 19.11.1992)- Trade agreement (Rabat, 6.11.1958)

- Agreement on Tourism Cooperation (Athens, 16.2.1994)

- Agreement on Avoidance of Double Taxation of Income from Ship and Aircraft Exploitation (Rabat, 28.7.1980)

V. Economic and Trade Relations

The volume of bilateral trade albeit small in absolute numbers has followed an upward trend in the past five years, with the exception of 2005.

V. Greek-Moroccan Cultural Relations

Cultural relations between Greece and Morocco are very good. Still, there is room for improvement.

The two countries educational relations are governed by the bilateral Educational Agreement signed in Athens in 1994. In implementation of the agreement, the First Educational Programme between the two countries was signed in 2001, and it has been the basis for closer bilateral cooperation. It will remain in force until the signing of a new one. The programme provides for broad cooperation and exchanges in the scientific sector, and in the fields of education, culture, archaeological research, sports, the younger generation and mass media.

VI. Greek Community

The Greek community of Morocco is estimated to have numbered more than 3,000 people at its peak. Today, it has dwindled to a few dozen families scattered around the country.

The seat of Moroccos Greek community is in Casablanca, where there is a Christian Orthodox Church, funded almost entirely by the Greek state, and falling under the jurisdiction of the Bishopric of Cartagena of the Patriarchate of Alexandria. The Greek community has been granting permission to other Christian orthodox communities in Casablanca to use its Church and the adjoining hall.
