The National Council on Foreign Policy was established under Law 3132/9.4.2003, in implementation of the provisions of Article 82, Paragraph 4, of the Constitution.
The National Council on Foreign Policy advises the government, examining issues relevant to the strategic planning of foreign policy. In practice, it provides the opportunity for an in-depth briefing of parliamentary parties by the government on recent developments, and for an exchange of views regarding issues on the agenda of a given Council meeting.
The makeup of the Council, as well as the manner in which members are appointed, is described in Article 1 of the Law establishing the Council, whereas the manner in which it is convened and other issues regarding its functioning are set out in Article 3 of the Law in question. Article 3, Paragraph 5, of the Law provides for the confidentiality of all Council discussions and documents (mainly informational).
The subjects on the agendas of these meetings consisted mainly of current issues being addressed by the countries foreign policy.
