The Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was established in 1999 with the main purpose to provide the primary professional training of the candidates who successfully pass the Diplomatic Corps entrance examination. The Diplomatic Academy operates as an independent unit which reports directly to the Foreign Minister.
The duration of the primary professional training is of twelve months. During this period, the students are trained on issues of foreign policy, public administration and diplomatic practice as well as on issues of economic and commercial diplomacy.
The Diplomatic Academy is also responsible for:
- The continuing education of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ personnel
- The organization of educational seminars for foreign diplomats on issues of external policy
- The organization of educational seminars for Greek civil servants of other Ministries and governmental agencies on issues of foreign affairs
Moreover, through a series of bilateral and multilateral agreements with foreign institutions and agencies, the Diplomatic Academy has set up a framework for enhancing international cooperation on education and training issues.
The Academy is headed by a member of the Diplomatic Corps of ambassadorial rank. The Director of the Diplomatic Academy is Ambassador Stavros Vassilopoulos.
